Knee Replacement Rehabilitation
Recovery after a total or partial knee replacement is individual. If you need help with walking, movement or daily tasks after discharge, we can review your hospital exercise plan and surgical instructions with you at our Newham clinic.

Before your first visit
Bring your discharge advice
Your hospital team should give you an exercise and daily-activity plan before discharge. Keep following their wound, medication, walking-aid and movement advice; a routine clinic appointment does not replace surgical follow-up.
Helpful information to bring
- Your discharge summary, exercise sheet and date/type of operation, if available
- Any instructions about weight bearing, walking aids or movements to avoid
- Your questions about walking, stairs, work and activities that matter to you
When to get medical help
After a recent knee replacement, seek an urgent GP appointment or NHS 111 advice for throbbing or cramping leg pain, fever or chills, wound discharge, or redness, swelling or pain that is worsening or not improving.
If leg pain or swelling occurs with chest pain or difficulty breathing, call 999 or go to A&E immediately.
This is a summary of NHS warning signs, not a substitute for your surgical team's instructions.
Is this right for you?

- People finding everyday movement or walking difficult despite the advice given at discharge
- People whose self-directed exercises are not meeting their functional goals
Your appointment
What your care includes
- Review of the operation, discharge advice and any weight-bearing or movement restrictions
- Assessment of knee movement, walking and tasks important to you
- An exercise and activity plan adjusted to your symptoms and surgical instructions
- Progress reviews that consider swelling, function and your follow-up with the surgical team
What happens next
Assessment, treatment, and progress
Begin with your discharge plan
We check which operation you had, the exercises you were taught, your walking-aid advice and any specific restrictions. Hospital and surgeon instructions take priority.
Work on everyday function
Depending on your assessment, care may focus on comfortable knee movement, walking, strength and activities such as stairs or getting up from a chair.
Review and adapt
We adjust the plan around your response and goals. Returning to work, driving or sport depends on your individual recovery and the advice of your surgical team.
