For employers, HR and occupational health referrers

Employer-funded physiotherapy at home

A home setting may suit some employees who need physiotherapy rehabilitation and find clinic travel difficult. Discuss the broad work-related or recovery needs with Nexus so clinical suitability, the visit address, capacity, consent-led reporting and funding can be agreed before care is arranged.

Discuss employer-funded home care
  • Individual rehabilitation needs reviewed
  • Home and clinic options considered
  • Reporting and funding agreed first

When a home setting may be appropriate

An employee may need help with muscle, joint or movement difficulties after injury, illness or surgery, while attending a clinic is temporarily difficult. A home assessment can consider relevant daily movements in the actual surroundings where the person is recovering. It is not automatically the right setting for every work-related condition.

The clinical need, medical or surgical advice, employee preferences and practical access requirements guide the service discussion. Explain the broad rehabilitation requested and whether a home-only or combined home-and-clinic arrangement is being considered. Appropriate clinician expertise and available capacity are checked before a proposal is accepted.

Rehabilitation with clear work-related goals

Where agreed, physiotherapy can address movement or functional difficulties relevant to the person's usual activities and job demands. Assessment findings inform the individual plan; treatment is not selected solely from a job title or the fact that an employer is paying.

A treating-physio update may explain relevant physical findings, progress, barriers and recommendations within the agreed scope. It does not guarantee a return-to-work date or replace the employer's decisions and any wider medical or occupational-health advice. Confirm the questions and intended recipients before commissioning a functional report.

  • Identify broad physical job demands and the rehabilitation questions you need addressed.
  • Distinguish treatment from a separately commissioned assessment or detailed report.
  • Discuss how recommendations will be reviewed as symptoms, function or work circumstances change.

Home physiotherapy is not every home-working service

This page concerns individually agreed physiotherapy rehabilitation at a visit address. It does not automatically include a home-workstation/DSE assessment, occupational therapy, home adaptations, an occupational-health medical examination or a complete workplace programme.

If you need workstation support, a workplace visit or an on-site programme, describe that separately so the appropriate service and competence can be checked. A home rehabilitation appointment must not be used to assume that those additional assessments or reports have been commissioned.

Location, scheduling and funding

We review the actual treatment address rather than assuming the employee's correspondence address is the visit location. Travel, access, assistance requirements and clinician capacity are considered for the proposed arrangement; a named borough or an online service page does not guarantee acceptance.

Funding and authorisation details

Before work starts, agree the organisation authorising care, number of visits or budget, reporting, payer, invoice recipient, payment terms and applicable cancellation arrangements. Professional charges are supplied in your quote or existing agreement, not published as agency prices on this page. Further work or a change in delivery needs the relevant approval.

Questions before arranging care

Is this only for employees who work from home?

No. The proposed treatment setting and rehabilitation need matter more than whether the employee normally works at home. We review individual needs and consider whether home or clinic physiotherapy is appropriate.

Does employer funding automatically include a report to HR?

No. Agree the reporting questions, scope, recipients and appropriate employee consent or disclosure arrangements before the service begins. Detailed additional reporting may need a separate quotation.

Can we choose a public self-pay appointment and invoice it to the company afterwards?

Discuss employer-funded care through the professional enquiry first. A public self-pay or private-insurance booking does not establish an employer payment agreement, treatment authority or reporting instruction.

Can you assess a home workstation during the rehabilitation appointment?

Do not assume a workstation or DSE assessment is included. Explain that request separately so suitability, the appropriate clinician, assessment format and any additional scope can be agreed.

Discuss the service you need

Share organisation contact details and broad service requirements only. Keep employee identifiers, health details, occupational records and absence documents out of the public enquiry. We explain the appropriate referral route after checking the proposed service.
