Hip Replacement Rehabilitation near Bow

Build walking confidence and everyday function while respecting your surgical team's hip precautions.

Care shaped around your goals

After a hip replacement, the movements and activities you have been advised to follow may depend on your operation and surgical team. We can help you apply that plan to walking and everyday function after discharge.

When an assessment may help

  • People discharged after a hip replacement who want help applying their hospital rehabilitation plan
  • People finding walking, stairs or other everyday tasks difficult after discharge
  • People whose self-directed rehabilitation is not meeting their functional goals

Your physiotherapy appointment

  • Review of discharge advice, walking-aid instructions and any hip precautions given to you
  • Assessment of walking, movement, strength and relevant daily tasks
  • Individual exercises and activity advice that follow your surgical instructions
  • Progress reviews with changes guided by your response and goals
How your rehabilitation progresses
  1. Check your operation advice

We review the discharge exercises, walking-aid plan and any precautions your team prescribed. We do not assume the same restrictions apply to every hip replacement.

  2. Build daily confidence

Depending on your assessment, the plan may address walking, getting up from a chair, stairs and strength for the activities you need to do.

  3. Progress with your goals

We adapt exercises as your movement and confidence change. Decisions about driving, work and higher-impact activity should follow your surgical team's advice.

Your visit from Bow

The route starts at Bow Road station. Bow Church DLR or your own address may suit you better. Compare the complete journey to the leisure centre, rather than assuming nearby stations have the same route.

For a visit before or after work, plan from the place you will actually leave that day. If you need to bring work or sports clothing for assessment, allow time to change before the appointment.

What to prepare before travelling
  • Bring your operation details and the precautions you were personally given.
  • Bring your usual walking aid and plan a manageable journey to the clinic.
  • Note difficulties with sitting, stairs, walking or getting in and out of a car.

Directions use an example starting point, not a guaranteed travel time. Check current routes and access requirements before setting off.

Before you book

Do all hip replacements have the same exercise restrictions?

No. Precautions depend on your operation and your surgical team's advice. Bring your instructions so we can adapt care to you. If advice is unclear, check with that team rather than following a generic exercise programme online.

After surgery: when to get medical help

After a recent hip replacement, seek an urgent GP appointment or NHS 111 advice for throbbing or cramping hip or leg pain, fever or chills, wound discharge, or redness, swelling or pain that is worsening or not improving.

If hip or leg pain and swelling occurs with chest pain or difficulty breathing, call 999 or go to A&E immediately.

Choose how you pay

Self-pay or health cash plan

A 30-minute physiotherapy appointment is £60. You do not need a GP referral to book self-pay. If claiming through a cash plan, check eligibility and receipt requirements with your provider first.

Private health insurance

Check that your plan covers your condition, the Newham clinic and your chosen physiotherapist. Have your authorisation details ready; cover and any excess depend on your policy.
